Old Timey Tubs

Clawfoot and Other Antique Tubs

This special portion concentrates on bathtub remodel projects for maybe a DIY weekend but also gives ideas and tips for having a bath tub you can be proud of. First, let's reminisce.

Remember when you used to go once a week to visit your grandmother's home? They’d have so many interesting and different things, especially if they lived in an older house. One thing I really loved about my grandparent’s house was the fact that they had both a clawfoot pedestal bathtub and sink. Just the thought gives me some fantastic remodel ideas!

The Bathroom Ambiance
It had a regal charm to it and I always wanted the same when I grew up and had my own home. Now that I do I’ve been searching for a pedestal bathtub to place in my main bath. The home I live in is relatively new so the fixtures in the bathroom are very modern. They lack the charm that a pedestal claw bathtub possess.

Finding Bathtubs for My Remodel Project
I was certain that I’d have to rummage through yard sales or an old abandoned house to find an old bathtub, faucet and other fixtures to get the look I wanted for my bath remodel idea. This concerned me because I realized that buying a used bathtub that had been installed and then removed from another older house may be cracked or worn. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I could actually purchase new fixtures that resembled the ones my grandparents had in their home for my remodel job.

Remodel Step One: Taking Out the Old Tub
Removing the old fixtures was quite a job. I had no idea exactly how heavy a bathtub could be. Hiring a plumber is certainly the best approach as most offer a guarantee when they remodel and install a bathroom tub or a sink. The plumber we hired explained the process to us and we quickly realized that in order to accommodate the tub we wanted we’d have to install new flooring as well.

The Rest of the Bathroom Decor
We decided to have that done first. After the old fixtures were removed, we chose flooring and had a contractor install it for us. Realizing that so much more of the flooring would be exposed now than previously with the traditional bathtub and sink, we chose something that would complement the entire look of the room. After it was completely dry, it was time to install the new bath tub.

Our Remodeling Project was a Huge Success!!
Everyone who visits our home after the bathtub remodel and other installed fixtures were completed raves about the new look of the main bathroom; they absolutely love the look of the freshly remodeled tub and room. It truly looks great having a clawfoot bathtub and pedestal sink installed and they work just as well as the traditional fixtures that were there when before the remodel became a reality.

More Bathtub Remodel Projects for the Future

The next remodel job I have lined up involving a bathtub, no matter if you are buying old or a brand new walk in bathtub, is to do the same thing to the master bath. What better way to relax than to lock myself in my private small room and take a nice, long, and relaxing soak in my new (old fashioned) claw tub filled with warm and soapy bubbles? The best part is; you can do a bathtub remodel project like this one too! You just need to dream, make a plan, and get started!
